The Graduated Driver’s Licensing (GDL) program, administered by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), is designed to enhance road safety by gradually introducing new drivers to driving challenges as they gain experience. This structured program ensures that drivers develop the skills and confidence needed to become safe, competent Class 5 drivers. Here’s a breakdown of the program:
Available at age 15 (with high school driver education) or 16. Requires passing a written knowledge test, sign test, and vision test. You must drive with a supervising driver, follow strict restrictions (e.g., no nighttime driving, zero tolerance for alcohol/drugs), and hold this license for at least 9 months.
After completing mandatory driver education (like our 6/6 program) and passing a road test, you enter Novice 1. Restrictions include limits on passengers and a continued ban on cellphone use. This stage lasts 6 months.
After 6 months of safe driving in Novice 1, you progress to Novice 2 for 12 months. Restrictions are further relaxed, but safe driving is critical to avoid resetting the timeline.
After completing Novice 2 with no at-fault collisions or convictions, you graduate to a full Class 5 license, granting unrestricted driving privileges.
In-Car Training (6 Hours): Hands-on driving practice with our SGI-certified instructor in a dual-brake, fully insured vehicle. Learn essential skills like lane changes, parking, and navigating Saskatoon’s roads safely.
In-Class Training (6 Hours): Interactive online sessions held on weekends, covering road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices as outlined in the Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook.
